What is Sky Fibre Broadband?
Sky Fibre Broadband has been rolling out across the UK for the past few years and is now available to more than 80% of the population. Sky’s broadband products have acquired a big uptake in customers enjoying the super-fast cable and Full Fibre Ultrafast services.
As most of us are well aware Fibre refers to a Broadband service which is provided via a fibre optic cable, as apposed to ADSL Broadband which is provided through a traditional fixed telephone line. So it is worth noting that the ‘Sky Superfast’ Broadband service (via phone line), should not be confused with Sky’s Full Fibre Broadband service (cable). The coverage for these networks span the majority of the UK.
Who would benefit from Sky Fibre Broadband?
Households where there are a number of individuals who use the internet at the same time. If you share a connection and use the internet for streaming online content such as movies or games. Those of us who download or upload large files such as videos and trial software.
What are the main differences between Sky’s ADSL and Fibre Broadband?
Apart from what we have discussed above, the biggest difference between the two is the speed.
ADSL Broadband:
As of the spring of 2023, Sky was phasing out their ADSL fixed phone line broadband service. This is because improvements in the network means that customers can access a minimum of Sky’s Superfast 35 service.
Sky Fibre Broadband:‘
‘Sky Broadband Superfast‘ offers speeds on average of 61mb. This service is uncapped so you get unlimited monthly allowance and there is no network management to slow speeds at peak times. Both ‘Superfast‘ services are also available without Sky TV.
Sky Ultrafast Broadband:
‘Sky Ultrafast Broadband‘ and ‘Sky Ultrafast Plus‘ offer speeds on average of 145mb and 500mb respectively. ‘Sky Gigafast Broadband‘ is now available with speeds averaging 900mb. These new services are available to a growing number of homes across the UK. These new services are also unlimited and available with or without Sky TV. Are Calls included?:
No, only Pay-As-You-Go. However, Sky Talk packages start from just £5.75 per month and include free calls to UK landlines and mobiles. Do I need a landline even though Sky Fibre is a cable service?
That depends on the service you choose. Sky’S ADSL service Sky Essential, Sky Superfast 35 and Sky Superfast include a landline (and the line rental cost). However, a landline is not required for Sky Ultrafast, Ultrafast Plus or Sky Gigafast services. This is because these services are provided via a dedicated fibre cable (or Fibre-To-The-Premises ‘FTTP’ as it is known).
Do I need to be a Sky TV customer in order to get Sky Broadband
No, Sky Broadband packages are also available without Sky TV. However, depending on the latest offers, there maybe a discount incentive of for Sky Broadband services when taken with a Sky TV package.
How long is a Sky Broadband contract?
Sky Broadband Unlimited and Sky Fibre Broadband services are subject to a 18 month contract^.
