Sky WiFi Max Review – The Next-Generation WiFi Booster

Sky has heard the cries from many a household for better WiFi signal. Getting WiFi in every room of the house has plagued mankind for generation(s). Well, fear not my fellow internet traveller, Sky has the answer! Building on their previous solution ‘Sky Broadband Boost’, Sky’s next-generation WiFi boosting technology is here: Sky WiFi Max. And with it, a more confident promise.

With Sky WiFi Max, Sky guarantees their customers Wall-to-Wall WiFi in every corner of the home, just like they did with Sky Boost, but now at speeds of up to 25Mbps. That is a substantial improvement over the previous 3Mbps guarantee. They are calling it an ‘Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee’ and it varies depending on your broadband package.

Is your WiFi signal ignoring your favourite corner of the sofa? …Of course it is. Show that WiFi who’s boss with Sky WiFi Max. But before you start throwing money at your computer screen, I need to give you a few more details.

Once you’ve ticked that box, Sky WiFi Max customers will receive the brand new next-gen Sky Max Hub, equipped with Wifi 6 technology and next level security features. True to their word, Sky’s guarantee will include an expert engineer to review your home set up and send you up to 3 extra Sky Max Pod signal boosters if needed. Oh, and if they can’t meet the guarantee, Sky will give you money back.

We’re saved. Sky’s metaphorical knight in shining armour is here. Sweet dreams WiFi gremlins! I will finally get to sit in my armchair that has never seen more than 1 bar of signal. Move dog!

Sky Wifi Max – the technology

If you would like to know more, let’s dive a little deeper shall we…

Sky WiFi Max is a WiFi upgrade service you can add-on to your Sky Broadband package. It is the next-gen version of their previous WiFi boosting service, aptly named Sky Broadband Boost. Sky Boost is still currently available as a cheaper option, and is your only option if you have Sky Q TV, for now. Sky Boost is still good, but the new Sky WiFi Max is just better – a lot better.

With Sky WiFi Max you get Sky’s brand new router, the Sky Max Hub. The new Hub supports WiFi 6 technology which is the latest in WiFi connectivity, as used in the most recent iPhones from model 11. WiFi 6 means more devices at the same time, much more stable connections and of course, faster. There’s a catch though, you can only benefit from this feature if you have devices that support Wi-Fi 6.

The Max Hub also supports WPA3 security encryption, which is the most advanced security available today for your home network devices. But for those plug-and-play enthusiasts, Sky’s new router boasts automatic advanced security monitoring of your network, right out the box. And, the Hub links up to the My Sky App for enhanced adjustable parental controls, more on that later.

This includes our current voucher deal

Compare Sky WiFi Hubs

We can see how Sky’s new next-gen Hub compares to their previous model here:

Sky Max Hub Sky Broadband Hub
WiFi Connectivity: WiFi 6 WiFi 5
Mech WiFi: Yes No
WiFi Guarantee: Up to 25Mbps in every room 3Mbps in every room
Security: WPA3 and Firewall WPA2 and Firewall
App Connectivity: Yes No
Pause & Schedule controls: Yes No
USB-C Port: Yes No
Model Number: Sky SR213
Sky SR203

So, it’s a Next-Gen router… it’s got to have an App, right?

Yes. Sky’s new Hub connects to the My Sky App for much greater control over your network and devices. You can make profiles for each device, and programme an internet surfer schedule if you like.

For example, you can name each of your kid’s iPhones and set times when they can access the web and when they can’t, like after bedtime. Or if the unfortunate little one has been really naughty, you can instantly pause their access with the touch of a button! All this power is now at your fingertips thanks to the My Sky App. Parents – 1, Children – 0.

As mentioned before, The Sky Max Hub also features an ‘Advanced Security Monitoring’ system that automatically blocks malware and dangerous phishing sites. The system will alert you of any suspicious activity on your network via the My Sky App, and you can decide what to do if anything happens.

Now, about that Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee…

Sky ups their game from the previous Wall-to-Wall Guarantee of 3Mbps in every room with Sky’s standard broadband service, to an Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee of up to 25Mbps in every room with the Sky WiFi Max add-on.

Let’s do a quick side by side comparison of the available WiFi guarantees:

Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee Standard Wall-to-Wall Guarantee
WiFi Speed: 25Mbps (Ultrafast & Gigafast)
10Mbps (Superfast & Full Fibre 100
3Mbps
Extra Hardware: Up to 3 Sky Max Pods No
Coverage: 12 rooms total, incl 5 Bedrooms 12 rooms total, incl 5 Bedrooms
Engineer Visit: Yes No
Money Back: 1 month broadband subscription fee
+ 1 month WiFi Max fee
1 month broadband subscription fee

Sky’s Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee covers all the main rooms in your house such as kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms. Up to 5 bedrooms are included and up to 12 rooms in total. This includes your conservatory, and the garage but only if it can be accessed without going outside. Converted lofts must be fully boarded, furnished and have a fixed staircase to be included in the guarantee.

This means that sadly the garden shed is out of the picture, as are any external garages and annexes. This of course doesn’t necessarily mean your WiFi won’t reach them, it’s just Sky doesn’t guarantee it./

Get an extra boost with Sky Max Pods

If your house has thick internal walls, or hard to reach places, Sky will send you up to 3 Sky Max Pods to supercharge your WiFi signal to meet the guarantee. Sky will assess your WiFi setup and send you the Pods if you need them, Or an engineer will pop over free of charge to get everything up to speed.

The Sky Max Pods will make up what is known as a ‘Mesh Network’ in your home. It’s the next-generation of Wi-Fi boosting technology and way more resilient, giving brands confidence to say words like ‘unstoppable’ and ‘indestructible’ when referring to your new home Wi-Fi.

Sky is also very confident and if they can’t manage to meet their speed promise after 14 days, you can claim credit back that you have paid for one month’s Sky Broadband subscription including Sky WiFi Max.

Summary

Sky WiFi Max combines the latest technology with one of the fastest WiFi speed guarantees out there. Sky have recognised the need for this service, and no doubt it will be gladly received.

Strong WiFi that reaches every room of the house has always been a difficult challenge. I have personally experienced countless hours of faffing around with signal boosters to try and achieve the impossible! Well, Sky has stepped in armed to the teeth, and maybe even they can get WiFi into Dad’s back office.

We think Sky WiFi Max with the High-Tech new Hub, and Sky’s new Enhanced Wall-to-Wall WiFi Guarantee, is one of the safest bets out there to get your house in the fast lane. Next-Gen home WiFi has arrived.

Our Rating

Our Thoughts: Sky WIFI Max is an all round good product if you need that extra coverage around your home. There maybe a lengthy contract involved, but if you factor-in the consideration that you’re already subscribing to Sky Fibre for the same period – it’s a sure fire way to get those signals flowing.
